Cancer and its Treatment

The branch named oncology deals with diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Tumour originates in a cell which is the smallest unit of the body. The body forms new cells normally as per the need. Sometimes, this formation of cells becomes abnormal and cells are formed in the organ without its requirement and without loosing the older cells. These cells form a bulk of a mass called as tumour. If this tumour invades nearby tissues and spreads to other parts of the body, then they are said to be malignant i.e. cancerous.

Cancer integrates many diseases. There are around 100 types of cancers, named based on their origin. Line of treatment for each of them depends upon its type, severity and stage.

The treatment of cancer is no more restricted to cure the cancer only. Nowadays apart from cancer free survival, the treatment is also targeted towards improving quality of life.

Previously survival was the only aim while treating the cancer, and issues like cosmesis, pain relief, post-cancer life were considered secondary. Now with changing approach towards the treatment, goal of the treatment is also changed to providing the treatment which will improve the quality of life with pain free survival, better cosmesis and better functional results from the organ.

To achieve these goals, the treatment of cancer has become comprehensive including branches like Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care and Rehabilitation. All the experts of these branches work together in a team to create the best treatment plan for the patient.

Signs and symptoms

The signs and symptoms of cancer vary widely depending upon

the organ or location in which the tumour has developed.

The acronym ‘CAUTION’ elaborates the 7 most common signs of cancer.

C - Change in bowl and bladder routine

A - A sore that does not heal

U - Unusual bleeding or discharge

T - Thickening or Lump in the breast or elsewhere

I - Indigestion (Dyspepsia)

O - Obvious change to Warts or Moles

N - Nagging cough

These symptoms can be confused with the conditions other than cancer. Hence it is important to visit the physician in time and undergo certain tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Diagnosis of Cancer

Early detection of the cancer increases the chances of full recovery. Accurate diagnosis is important to understand the severity of the disease, its spread within the organ and also to other organs. Ultimately, the diagnosis helps in determining the stage of the disease and helps the oncologist to work out the best treatment plan for the patient.

Seeking the right medical assistance helps to understand the the severity and spread of the disease. At Jupiter Hospital, we provide under-one-roof facility for the diagnosis and treatment of the cancer. The advance technology equipment and skilled staff available at Jupiter Hospital come forward with the best choice for diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Along with the physical examination, cancer is diagnosed by using the results of certain tests. These tests are as follows -

  1. Laboratory tests - The laboratory tests like blood tests, tumour marker test, urine tests help to understand the abnormalities caused by cancer.
  2. Biopsy - In biopsy, a small piece of tumour tissue is taken out to study if the tumour is cancerous. There are several ways to perform the biopsy procedure. Which among these ways to be selected depends upon type and location of the tumour. The removed sample is studied under the microscope to detect cancer. Most of the times, biopsy is the most definitive way to diagnose the cancer.
  3. CT scan - The Computed Tomography scan is performed to diagnose the stage of the cancer. It helps to determine the size of the tumour, its shape and exact position in the organ. It also shows if the tumour has spread to other organs or nearby lymph nodes.
  4. MRI scan - The Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan provides the images which shows if the tumour has invaded with surrounding soft tissues, specially in case of head and neck cancer.
  5. PET scan (add photo) - The Positron Emission Tomography shows normal as well as abnormal metabolic activity going on in organs. Cancer cells have higher metabolic rate than the normal one, hence the test is used to find out spread of the disease to other parts of the body. The PET scan helps in determining the stage of the cancer. Also later, in ongoing treatment, PET scan is done to check whether the decided treatment plan is working for particular patient and also in finding the recurrence of cancer.
