What is bypass surgery?

Heart bypass surgery, commonly known as coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), is a procedure performed on a completely or partially blocked portion of an artery so as to redirect the blood flow by creating a bypass using a healthy blood vessel taken from the patient’s leg or arm. CABG does not treat the condition that caused the blockage in the first place, however, it helps to relieve the symptoms, improve heart function and alleviate the risks of cardiac arrest and heart failure.
