Pain management

Pain Management is misunderstood to mean “pain relief or taking pain killers”

Pain Management Consultant doctors determine what is causing you pain and how to overcome its suffering.

All of us have experienced pain from various causes- which may include underlying diseases, disorders, injuries and malignancies. Pain may also be the side effect of some treatment that you have been undergoing. It can affect any part of our body, unexpectedly and prevent us from indulging in normal day to day activities.

Pain management is a new branch of medicine and healthcare that solely focuses on helping patients live a quality life by reducing or relieving pain. This is done with a combination of therapies, exercises, medication, relaxation techniques, meditation and lifestyle modifications. Pain management focuses on both, acute, as well as chronic pain.

Conditions that call for the need for pain management:

Any pain needs to be addressed at the earliest for best results in the long term.

A properly tailored plan can help to manage pain that you have been experiencing for days or even months.

Some common conditions that can trigger pain:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions like joint pain, frozen shoulder, cervical spondylosis, arthritis and its types such as Gout, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Autoimmune conditions like Lupus and Crohn's disease, which are triggered by an abnormality in the immune system due to which it either stop attacking foreign bodies or mistake the patient's own cells as foreign bodies.
  • Endometriosis
  • Chronic pain disorders like fibromyalgia and Central pain syndrome
  • Facial pain
  • Neuropathy, which refers to severe nerve damage, usually caused by underlying conditions.
  • Chronic headaches

Pain can be

  • Acute pain - It refers to a sudden onset of shooting pain, usually triggered by an injury or underlying disease. The pain can be easily relieved by addressing the underlying cause. Pain triggered by conditions like bone fracture, appendicitis and burn is classified as acute pain
  • Chronic pain - It refers to the pain that slowly aggravates over time and can last for weeks and even months. It is usually the result of a disease or injury that has gone unnoticed or left untreated for very long. Pain triggered by conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia is classified as chronic pain
  • Nociceptive pain -It is a type of pain triggered by damage to your tissues. When this happens, the nociceptors, also known as nerve cell ends, send signals to the brain resulting in sudden onset of pain.
  • Neuropathic pain - It refers to the pain caused by a problem in the nervous system due to which it mistakenly generates pain signals without any specific underlying cause. You are likely to experience that if you have conditions like diabetes or HIV

Pain evaluation

The first step of pain management is to find the underlying cause of the pain as the whole plan is curated in accordance with the same. During the consultation, our experts will ask you some questions and evaluate your medical history to figure out the potential causes of your pain. In case the underlying cause is known, a team will curate a plan and directly proceed with that, however in case the underlying cause is unknown if you test may be required to confirm the diagnosis.

There are other factors that are to be taken into account which include the location of the pain and its intensity.

Pain management modalities

Various modalities that our experts recommend for pain management include the following:

  • Home remedies - This is usually recommended to patients with mild to moderate injuries involving the bones and muscles, such as a sprain, twisting of elbow or ankle and sudden blow. You will be asked to follow techniques like RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) or perform some simple exercises
  • Counselling and therapy -These include modalities like cognitive-behavioural therapy and biofeedback that helps to enhance the way your mind is reacting to physical pain. Long term pain can often lead to anxiety and depression, both of which need to be addressed properly. These can be managed with the help of therapy, regular counselling and meditation techniques.
  • Exercises - Exercising can enhance the flow of blood throughout the body and help to improve your mobility, range of motion and posture, all of which can help to alleviate pain. Exercising does not necessarily mean lifting heavy but you can do other options like yoga, pilates, swimming, cycling, jogging.
  • Hands-on treatments - This includes specialized techniques like physical therapy, oil massages, chiropractic adjustment and acupuncture, all of which are known to reduce pain and improve mobility. These are age-old techniques that have been incorporated in modern medicine due to their effectiveness.
  • Lifestyle modifications - Sometimes it can be your lifestyle that is contributing to your pain and making healthy changes in the same can help to bring about a positive change. Lifestyle modifications involve weight loss, increase activity, improving sleep cycle and eating healthy
  • Medication -Medication is usually recommended to patients who are not responding positively to other treatment options. It can be documented as a primary treatment or in combination with other treatments. Some commonly prescribed medicines include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.
