Clubfoot, medically known as Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV), is one of the most common congenital orthopedic conditions seen in newborns. It affects approximately 1โ2 children per 1,000 live births and, if left untreated, can significantly affect walking, mobility, and quality of life. Fortunately, with early diagnosis and proper treatment, most children with clubfoot can achieve near-normal foot function and lead active lives.
Understanding Clubfoot
Clubfoot is a deformity present at birth in which one or both feet are twisted inward and downward. The condition can involve tight muscles, tendons, and abnormal positioning of bones and joints. About half of all affected children have involvement of both feet, and boys are affected nearly twice as often as girls.
Why Early Treatment Matters
Early intervention is the cornerstone of successful treatment. Starting therapy within the first few weeks of life provides the best chance for correction because newborn tissues are more flexible and responsive to treatment. Delayed treatment may make correction more difficult.
Common Signs Parents Should Notice
Parents may notice that the baby's foot points downward and inward, the affected foot may appear smaller than normal, the calf muscles may look thinner, or there may be stiffness and tightness around the ankle and heel cord.
Modern Treatment Approach โ The Ponseti Method
The Ponseti method is currently considered the gold standard treatment for clubfoot, with success rates exceeding 90% when followed properly.
Treatment generally includes:
Recovery and Follow-Up
The casting phase usually lasts 4โ8 weeks, depending on severity. However, treatment does not end after casting. Bracing is essential and may continue for months to years. Family compliance during the bracing phase plays a major role in preventing recurrence.
Long-Term Outcomes
Children treated early and appropriately often walk, run, play sports, and participate in normal daily activities without significant limitations. Early treatment also reduces the need for extensive surgery later in life.
No, untreated clubfoot generally does not self-correct.
No. Most children respond well to the Ponseti method with minimal procedures.
Yes, most children can participate in normal physical activities.
Clubfoot is a highly treatable condition when diagnosed early and managed correctly. Timely intervention, parental involvement, and adherence to treatment protocols can truly change the course of a childโs life. Early treatment today means better mobility tomorrow.
